‘…Finally we found three weeks in one place to bring the four sections together: the Avant Premiere at Time Festival, De Vooruit, Ghent, in April 1993, followed fast by the World Premiere at Union Chapel, London, with the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), in June 1993.
Those two nights at Union Chapel I will never forget. We had a hunch that we could reach a bigger audience by aiming not only at experimental and sound art listeners but at pre-club goers too, staging it at 22.00 for the club crowd shinkansen already worked with.
The flyer read: “Raw Ambient Mindscape. String Riffs, Drum Beats, Massed Pianos, Blasting Brass for Concentrated Listeners. Vinyl Requiem is a large scale live event for the vinyl era. A personal tribute by sound composer Philip Jeck and visual artist Lol Sargent. Jeck’s sound source is vinyl, manipulated live. His musicians, Dansette record players, are vertically stacked to provide a giant screen for Sargent’s slide and film projections. Multi-layered colours and textures illuminate the wall of sound. Customised discs spin loops and shift vibes. Dansettes become the musicians of the mind.”
